D.R. Congo is, at any given time, the poorest country in the world.  The largest city in the east, Goma, has been coined the “Rape Capital of the World.”  Ten kilometers northwest of Goma, in the North Kivu province, is a historic refugee camp and current IDP camp called Mugunga.  It’s also called “Blood Land” by the locals because of the multiple wars and genocide.  Currently, there are thousands of internally displaced people, widows, orphans, and victimized individuals who live and survive in Mugunga.

On a pilot trip in July of 2018, Legacy Incorporated met up with some Congolese leaders in Goma and Mugunga.  After this initial meeting, Legacy Incorporated built its first safe-home.  It was built by a local woodworker, and it just so happened to be the first home he ever designed and built.  Today, he and his team continue to build safe-homes for widows and victimized women in the Mugunga camp.

Legacy owns two separate pieces of property with homes on each of the parcels.  The women have named these safe-havens Asante Mungu 1.0 and Asante Mungu 2.0.  Asante Mungu means “Thank you God” in Swahili.  The women wholeheartedly believe that God has heard their prayers and that their hopeless situations in the “Rape Capital of the World” have turned to hope and joy.

Watch this video to see their gratitude expressed through song and dance on the move-in day.
